Search engine optimisation for crypto
Crypto has gone from a curiosity to an industry with exchanges, wallets, DeFi protocols, news sites and a thousand token projects, all of them publishing and all of them wanting the same searchers. Standing out in Google has got harder every year.
Crypto SEO is how you do it. It is search engine optimisation built around the way crypto sites work and the way crypto users search, and this article is how we go about it for the crypto and finance sites in our own portfolio at SEO Butler.

Crypto content decay planner: how fast your pages go stale
Crypto content rots faster than any other vertical — prices move, protocols fork, regulations land, and Google’s freshness systems notice before you do. Pick a content type to see its typical decay speed and the refresh cadence that keeps it ranking.
What a “real” refresh means to Google
- 1Update the substance, not the dateChanging the year in the title with stale figures underneath is the pattern freshness systems learned to ignore first.
- 2Re-verify every number and screenshotFees, limits, supported coins, UI — crypto reviews are wrong within months, and YMYL scrutiny punishes wrong.
- 3Log the change visiblyAn honest “what changed” note with a real date builds the trust signals crypto content is judged on.
Decay estimates are illustrative planning aids for education — actual decay depends on the SERP. Watch rankings, not the calendar, for the final call.
What is Crypto SEO?
Crypto SEO is the work of getting cryptocurrency websites, whether that is an exchange, a wallet, a DeFi project, a blockchain or a news site, to rank higher in Google for the terms their users search. The techniques are standard SEO. The subject matter, the audience and the risk are not.
Crypto readers know their subject and have been burned before, so they check what they read and leave quickly when a page is vague or out of date. The rules change quickly too, both from regulators and from Google itself, which treats crypto as a “your money or your life” topic and holds it to a higher standard of accuracy and expertise. Ranking here means being visibly credible, not just visible.
Get that right and the site earns a kind of authority that is very hard for a newcomer to copy.
SEO for cryptocurrency is a skill
Keywords alone will not do it. Crypto SEO takes technical SEO, content and link building working together and aimed at the crypto market specifically, because the people you are trying to reach are unusually well informed and unusually sceptical.
They want specifics, they want them current, and they want to see who wrote them. A page that hedges or repeats what every other site says will not hold them, and Google can tell when people leave straight away.
On top of that the ground keeps moving. New chains, new products, new regulation and new Google updates arrive every few months, and the sites that keep ranking are the ones that keep up.
That is what makes crypto SEO a specialism rather than a checklist.
Where SEO Butler fits into Crypto SEO
Crypto and finance are two of the verticals we know best, and we treat them differently from an ordinary business site because Google does. We are not an SEO agency, though. We do not audit your exchange or run your campaign. What we sell is placements on real finance, technology and crypto publishers through our backlink marketplace, and content written by people who understand the subject.
Everything else on this page, from keyword research and link building to content and technical fixes, is how we run our own sites. It is written down here because the same thinking decides which publishers we list and how our writers work.
Crypto SEO is one of the best ways to drive traffic
Paid channels are awkward for crypto. Ad platforms restrict or ban a lot of crypto advertising, the clicks are expensive where they are allowed, and the traffic stops the moment the budget does. Search is the channel that keeps working, and in a market this competitive a first-page ranking is worth a great deal.
Organic visitors also behave better. They came looking for the thing you offer, they stay longer and they convert more often than people who clicked an ad. Over time a site that ranks for the right terms becomes a name people recognise and return to, which in crypto is half the battle.
Rankings build the brand as well as the traffic.
How we do Crypto SEO on our own sites
There is no trick to it, only the work done properly and in the right order. Here is what that looks like.
Keyword research
We map how the audience searches: the coins, the products, the “how to” questions, the comparisons, the problems people run into. Then we check what a site can actually rank for now and what has to wait.
The valuable terms are often the specific ones. “Crypto exchange” is a war; “how to withdraw from an exchange to a bank account in Germany” is a page you can own in a month, and the people searching it are closer to signing up.
Link building for organic traffic
Links matter everywhere, and in crypto they matter more, because they are how Google decides whether a site in a risky category can be trusted. For our own money sites we place them through our own backlink marketplace, on the real finance, technology and crypto sites in the marketplace. You can buy from the same list.
Where possible we also give publishers a reason to link on their own: data, guides and explainers that are worth citing. Placements bring the authority. Good content makes them cheaper.
Content optimisation for search engines
Crypto content has to satisfy two readers, the user and Google, and they want the same things: a clear structure, the right terms in the right places, and a straight answer to the question that brought the person to the page.
We structure pages so they can be scanned, with proper headings, short sections and images where they help, and we write for people who already understand the basics and want the detail.
Accurate, current, specific content is what earns trust in this market. Anything less is filler, and crypto readers can smell filler.
Analytics for improvement
We watch the numbers after every change on our sites: where traffic comes from, what people do on the page, which pages convert and which lose people. That tells us what to do next rather than guessing.
It is a habit worth copying. A short monthly look at what moved, what changed and what is planned keeps the money from becoming a mystery.
Why you should use smart links
A smart link is a tracked URL. Instead of pointing a placement or a campaign at a plain address, you point it at a link that records every click, the source it came from and what the visitor did next. For link building that is the difference between knowing a placement is live and knowing whether it sends anyone.
With that data you can see which publishers, which anchors and which pieces of content actually bring crypto users to the site, and spend the next budget there instead of spreading it evenly and hoping.
It also shows you how people behave once they arrive, which feeds straight back into what you write and where you place next.
Core Web Vitals – ranking factors by Google
Core Web Vitals are Google’s measures of how a page feels to use: how quickly the main content loads, how soon it responds to a tap, and whether things jump around while it renders. They are part of how Google ranks pages, and crypto sites, with their live price tickers, charts and third-party scripts, often score badly.
Fixing that is technical work: lighter images, faster server responses, fewer blocking scripts and a layout that does not shift. Users notice the difference before Google does.
3 cryptocurrency SEO mistakes
These are the three we see most often on crypto sites, and all three are fixable.
Lacking website structure
A crypto site that has grown by adding pages wherever they fit ends up with no structure at all, and Google cannot work out which pages matter. Give the site a clear hierarchy, with sensible categories and subcategories, so both users and crawlers can find their way around.
Internal links between related pages and an accurate XML sitemap finish the job. It is unglamorous work and it moves rankings.
Incorrect application of keywords
Stuffing a page with the target keyword does not work any more and has not for years. Use the term naturally, once where it counts, and write the rest for the reader. Google understands synonyms and related phrases, so a page that reads well usually ranks better than one that reads like a keyword list.
Vary the wording, answer the question, and let the keyword sit where it would sit if you were explaining the topic to a colleague.
Avoiding blogging
A blog is how a crypto site ranks for the hundreds of questions its main pages never will. Regular, well-researched posts bring in long-tail traffic, earn links and, over time, make the site the reference for its corner of the market.
Sites that skip it leave all of that on the table. A blog that is kept up also gives people a reason to come back, and returning visitors are the ones who eventually sign up.
Summary
Crypto SEO takes ordinary SEO principles and applies them to a market that is more competitive, more sceptical and more closely watched by Google than most. Keyword research, links, content and measurement, done properly and kept up, are what bring traffic to a crypto site and keep it there.
Structure the site properly, use keywords with some restraint and keep the blog alive, and you have already avoided the mistakes that hold most crypto sites back.
If you would rather not do all of that alone, the parts we can help with are the links and the content. The rest is on this page for free.
