SEO Butler penguin butler with a trolley of website cards - iGaming SEO across nine markets, nine campaigns

Online casinos and sportsbooks have been growing for years, and so has the number of sites chasing the same players. Most of that traffic still arrives through Google, which is why iGaming brands spend so much on search.

The catch is that iGaming is probably the hardest vertical there is to rank in. The page-one sites have been there a long time, the publishers who could link to you are nervous about gambling, and the rules change from one border to the next.

What makes iGaming SEO different.

This guide covers what iGaming SEO actually involves, why it is different from SEO for a normal business, and how we go about it on our own sites at SEO Butler.

What is iGaming SEO?

iGaming SEO is search engine optimisation for online casinos, sports betting, poker, bingo and lottery sites. The mechanics are the same as for any other website. What changes is the pressure: every keyword worth having is commercial, every competitor has a budget, and the content has to be accurate about bonuses, payments and licensing or somebody will report it.

In practice that means three kinds of work. On-page SEO sorts out what each page says and how it is structured. Off-page SEO covers the links and mentions the site earns elsewhere, which in this vertical is most of the battle.

The third is technical SEO, which keeps the site fast, crawlable and indexable. Casino sites tend to be heavy, with game lobbies, geo-redirects and thousands of near-duplicate promo pages, so this part gets neglected more often than you would expect.

What is the iGaming industry?

iGaming is the umbrella term for gambling that happens online: casinos, live dealer games, sportsbooks, poker rooms, bingo and lottery products. Some operators run one brand in one country. Others run dozens of brands across dozens of licences, and each of those brands needs its own search presence.

The industry moves quickly. Mobile play, new payment methods and new licensing regimes all change what people search for, and a keyword that was worth ranking for last year can be worthless once a market closes or a new bonus format takes over. Sites that stand still lose ground even when nothing on the page has changed.

Where SEO Butler fits into iGaming SEO

SEO Butler is based in Malta, which happens to be where a large part of the industry is licensed and where, according to Google Trends, interest in "igaming" runs higher than anywhere else in the world. We run a portfolio of websites of our own, a good number of them in gambling. In the marketplace, casino is the largest niche in the Finnish list.

We are not an SEO agency in the usual sense. We do not audit your site or run your campaign. What we sell is two things: placements on gambling-friendly publishers through our backlink marketplace, and native-language content. The rest of this article is how we handle iGaming SEO for our own sites, which is worth knowing whether you buy from us or not.

Why SEO matters so much for casino websites

Paid acquisition in gambling is expensive, restricted in many countries and switched off entirely in some. Organic search is the one channel that keeps working in every market you hold a licence for, and once a page ranks the traffic does not stop when the budget does.

There is a second reason. A casino that ranks for its own brand, for its bonus terms and for the questions players ask about it looks like a real business. That matters to players, to affiliates deciding whether to list you, and to Google, which weighs trust more heavily in gambling than almost anywhere else.

The goal is simple enough: be on page one when a player in your market searches for the thing you sell. Getting there is not. The head terms in most markets are held by sites with well over a thousand referring domains and years of history, so a realistic plan starts lower, on bonus, payment and game terms, and works up.

Authority is the thread running through all of it. Links from relevant sites, content that is accurate and useful, and a brand that turns up consistently across the web are what move a casino from page three to page one. There are no shortcuts that survive a core update.

Rankings and trust improve together, which is the whole point.

Where iGaming SEO gets difficult

Regulation first. Every country has its own rules on who may offer gambling, how it may be advertised and what a site is allowed to say. An SEO plan that ignores that will eventually cost you a licence, not just a ranking, so the legal position of each target market is the first thing we check.

Then there is the competition. The affiliates and operators at the top of the iGaming results have been doing this for a long time, and they are not going to leave quietly. Standing out takes better content, more patience and, above all, links. Links are harder to get in gambling than in any other niche, because many publishers simply will not touch the topic.

The two problems feed each other. A site in a grey market cannot always link out to gambling, a licensed publisher in a regulated one may only do so with disclaimers, and the sites that will link to anything are usually the ones you should avoid. Knowing which publishers are safe in which market is most of the job.

That knowledge is why iGaming brands use a specialist rather than a general agency.

How we do iGaming SEO on our own sites

Every one of our gambling sites starts the same way. We look at the market and the pages that need to earn money, and we write down what is holding them back. No template, and no fifty-page audit that nobody reads.

From there it is keyword research, the technical fixes that matter, a content plan, and links bought through our own backlink marketplace like any other customer would. The order changes from site to site. The pieces do not.

Auditing an iGaming website

The audit is where we find out what we are dealing with. How the site performs now, what is technically wrong with it, whether the content is any good and what the backlink profile looks like. On a gambling site that last part often turns up a history of cheap links, and it shapes everything that comes after.

Keyword research

Keyword research for gambling is less about finding hidden gems and more about being honest about what a site can win. We map a market's terms by tier, from the head terms nobody new will rank for to the bonus, payment and game queries where a committed site can compete. Long-tail and local-language terms usually carry the first traffic.

Local SEO

For a site aimed at one licensed country, local search is where the money is. It has to rank in the local language, on the local Google, for the local version of each query. That means local keywords, content written for that market rather than translated into it, and a clean set of business listings.

Where a physical presence applies, a properly managed Google Business Profile helps too, though for most online operators the local work is about language and links.

Technical SEO

Technical work on a casino site usually means speed, mobile rendering, crawl control and structure. Game lobbies and geo-redirects create thousands of URLs that Google does not need to see, and sorting that out often does more for indexing than any amount of new content.

A fast, clean site also converts better, which you notice in the revenue before you notice it in the rankings.

Content strategy

Content in iGaming has a specific job. Players want to know if a bonus is real, whether withdrawals are quick and which games pay out, and Google wants to see that a site answers those questions accurately. We plan content around what players actually search for, not around what the brand wants to say. It is the same brief our writers work to when a client orders content from us.

That covers guides, game and bonus pages, comparison content and the articles that carry a placement on another site. We keep it updated too, because a bonus page with last year's terms on it is worse than no page at all.

Link building

Links are the part of iGaming SEO that decides most outcomes, and they are the part most people get wrong. For our own money sites we place editorial links on the gambling-friendly sites in the marketplace, real sites with real traffic in the language of the market, and those are the sites you will find in the marketplace.

Some are guest posts, some are sponsored articles, and all of them sit on sites SEO Butler owns and runs. We would rather place five links that stay than fifty that get pruned in the next spam update, and the marketplace is put together on that basis.

Tracking and analytics

We track rankings, traffic and the referring domains we add to each of our sites, and we look at the numbers every month.

They tell us what to do next. If a group of bonus pages starts moving, that is where the next links go. If something drops after an update, we look at why before we buy anything else.

The short version

iGaming SEO is normal SEO with the difficulty turned up. Regulation, competition and reluctant publishers make it slower and more expensive than most verticals, and that is exactly why it pays off for the sites that do it properly.

We do all of the above for our own sites, from the audit and keyword work through technical fixes and content creation to the links. For yours, what we can offer is the two parts that are hardest to get right in gambling: placements on publishers that will actually take the topic, and content written by people who know it.

Done well, the result is a site that keeps bringing in players long after a paid campaign would have been switched off.
