Search engine optimisation for casinos

There are more online casinos than there are page-one positions, and every one of them wants the same few hundred keywords. If you want players to find you without paying for every single click, you have to rank, and in this industry ranking is a fight.

That is what casino SEO is for. Done properly it puts a site in front of players who are already looking for somewhere to play, and it keeps doing that month after month. We run casino sites of our own, so what follows is how we do it rather than theory.

Casino keyword map: pick battles you can actually win

Casino SERPs are the most expensive real estate in SEO, but the difficulty is wildly uneven across keyword types. Filter by the stage you are at to see where the realistic entry points are — and which page type each one demands.

Keyword typeExample shapeDifficultyPage that wins
Head commercial“online casino”BrutalDR 70+ comparison giants — a multi-year project, not a keyword
Geo-modified“online casino nz”HardLocal review hub with ccTLD links and market-specific licensing content
Bonus-modified“casino bonus no deposit”MediumFrequently-updated offer roundup — freshness is the moat
Brand reviews“[casino name] review”MediumGenuine hands-on review; long-tail brands are winnable early
Game guides“how does blackjack insurance work”LowTeaching content that builds the topical base head terms need later
Payment / process“casino that accepts [method]”Low-midSpecific, honest process pages — thin SERPs, real intent
Slot reviews (long tail)“[slot title] RTP”LowData-complete slot pages at scale; each one is small, the cluster is not

7 shown. The pattern: win the low bands to earn the topical authority, then spend links on the geo and bonus terms — our marketplace carries casino-accepting inventory in Finland (95 sites), Sweden, Norway and beyond; counts are rounded portfolio averages for context.

Difficulty bands are educational generalisations from campaigns in this vertical — your market’s SERP is the final word. Gambling content must respect each market’s licensing rules.

What is Casino SEO?

Casino SEO is the work of getting an online casino to rank higher in Google for the searches that bring in players: the game names, the bonus terms, the payment questions and, eventually, the big “online casino” terms in each market. It covers the pages themselves, the technical state of the site and the links pointing at it. The aim is organic traffic that turns into deposits.

It is its own discipline because the gambling industry has problems most websites never meet.

How does Casino SEO differ from traditional SEO?

The tools are the same. The environment is not. Casino keywords are some of the most competitive on the internet, the sites at the top have been there for years, and gambling is regulated in a way that a shop selling shoes is not. What you may say about a bonus, which markets you may target and whether a publisher is even allowed to link to you all depend on the licence.

So the work leans harder on compliance, on careful keyword research and on good content creation than SEO for an ordinary business does.

You also need to know the players. Someone searching for a no-deposit bonus wants something very different from someone searching for a live blackjack table, and the pages have to match that intent closely or they will not convert even when they rank.

And the competition never eases off. Rankings in this niche are held rather than won once, so the work has to keep going.

There is a local side too. Land-based casinos need to be found by people nearby, which is a different job from an online casino trying to reach a whole country.

For them it means local search terms, a well-kept business profile, reviews and directory listings, so the venue shows up when somebody searches for a casino in that city.

Where SEO Butler fits into Casino SEO

SEO Butler works from Malta, in the middle of the industry, and casino is the largest niche in our Finnish publisher list. We know which publishers will carry gambling content in each of our nine markets, which ones will not, and what a clean casino link profile looks like, because we build them for our own sites.

To be clear about what we offer: help procuring placements on those sites through our backlink marketplace, and content written by native speakers, for your own site or for the articles that carry a placement. We do not run your SEO for you. The rest of this page, from keyword research to technical SEO, is our own method, which you are welcome to borrow.

Google changes its rules often, and gambling gets hit by updates more than most. We keep an eye on that across our own sites and adjust as we go. The same caution goes into which sites stay in the marketplace.

How we improve Casino SEO on our own sites

Here is what the work actually looks like when we take a casino site from nowhere to page one.

Keyword research

Everything begins with the keywords, and in the casino niche choosing them badly is expensive. We look for the terms players use that a site can realistically rank for, then work out where each one belongs. There is no point chasing “online casino” on day one. There is a great deal of point in owning the bonus, game and payment queries in a market first.

Research is also about intent. A term with a lot of volume can be worthless if the people searching are not looking to play, and a small term can pay for the whole campaign.

We mix short head terms with the longer, more specific ones. The short ones are the long game. The long ones bring the first traffic and prove the site can rank at all.

Competitor analysis

The sites above you have already shown what Google rewards in a market. We take them apart, looking at where their links come from, which keywords they lean on and what their pages do that ours do not.

That tells us where the gaps are and how big the job is before we spend anything.

Optimising the site with keywords

Then the keywords go where they belong: titles, meta descriptions, headings, copy and internal links, so Google can see which page is about which query. Each page gets one job. Two pages fighting for the same term is one of the most common problems on casino sites, ours included in the early days.

Organic traffic

Organic traffic is the point of all this. Visitors who arrive from search are looking for what you offer, they cost nothing per click, and a page that ranks keeps sending them. Rankings do something for the brand as well. A casino that turns up at the top of the results looks established, and players notice.

Primary and secondary keywords

Every page gets a primary keyword, the term it exists to rank for, and a handful of secondary ones, the related phrases people use for the same thing. Covering both is what lets one page rank for dozens of searches instead of one.

Site structure

Casino sites grow in odd ways. Games get added, promotions come and go, and after a few years the structure makes sense to nobody. We tidy ours into clear categories so players can find a game in two clicks and Google can crawl the whole site without wasting time on pages that do not matter.

Adding high-quality content

Content still does a lot of the ranking work. Game guides, bonus explanations, payment pages and honest reviews give players a reason to stay and give Google something to rank. We write it for the market it is aimed at, keep it accurate, and update it when the terms change, because stale bonus content is a quick way to lose trust. This is also the content we write for clients.

Site architecture and navigation

Navigation should be obvious. Games, promotions, banking and support should each be one click from anywhere. A layout that helps a player find a slot in seconds also shows Google how the site fits together, and both of those show up in the numbers.

Internal linking

Internal links pass authority around a site and tell Google which pages matter most. We link from the pages that already have strength to the ones that need it, in a way that reads naturally, so new content gets found and the money pages get the push.

Header tags

Headings give a page its shape. We use them in order, one H1 and a sensible run of H2s and H3s, with the keyword where it belongs and nowhere it does not. It makes the page easier to read, and Google reads it the same way.

SEO-friendly URLs

A URL should say what the page is. Short, readable, with the keyword in it and no strings of parameters. Casino platforms are bad at this by default, so it is usually one of the first things we fix on a new site.

Build quality backlinks

This is the part that separates casino sites that rank from the ones that do not, and it is the part of the job we sell.

Quality over quantity

Ten links from real, relevant sites with real readers will outperform a thousand from a link farm, and they will still be there after the next spam update. Every site in the marketplace is actually about gambling, gaming, finance or the market in question, with real traffic, and checked by a person before it is listed.

Building high-quality links

We have spent years building a portfolio of our own sites that carry casino content across the markets we work in. That is what the backlink marketplace is: those sites, with their traffic and metrics shown, so you can pick the placements yourself. Our writers can produce the article in the local language if you need them to.

The risks of low-quality backlinks

Bad links are worse than no links. Spammy, irrelevant or obviously paid placements can pull a casino out of the results altogether, and cleaning up afterwards takes longer than building properly would have. We check the existing profile of every site we run, disavow what needs disavowing, and keep watching what turns up afterwards.

Improve technical SEO

Technical problems quietly cap everything else, and casino sites have more of them than most.

Site speed

A slow casino loses players before the lobby loads, and Google measures speed too. On our own sites we compress the images, trim the scripts, sort out caching and get the pages loading quickly on an ordinary phone connection.

Faster pages keep players on the site longer, and that shows up in rankings as well as revenue.

Mobile optimisation

Most casino play now happens on a phone, and Google ranks the mobile version of a site, not the desktop one. The whole site has to work on small screens: the games, the cashier and the account pages, not just the homepage.

A site that works well on mobile earns better engagement and better rankings at the same time.
